“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”
Who We Are
Dan Deckert 🇨🇦
I was born and raised in a log cabin on the outskirts of a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Canada.
By small town, I mean it had a bar, hotel, gas station, post office and less than 30 residents. My family grew, raised and hunted most of our own food. My childhood was materially simplistic but experientially diverse.
Being homeschooled gave us the freedom to prioritize travel and learning through experience. My curiosity for the world was sparked by my mom’s National Geographic collection and the 1999-2000 New Year’s broadcast across every timezone. However, it took years before this curiosity evolved into a life-defining decision.
Though we lived far from the ocean, my dad instilled navigational skills and a love for adventure on land, which later translated to the sea. At 16, I earned a scholarship to a boarding school near Philadelphia, where I finished high school and took a few college courses. I later enrolled in a small architecture school near Atlanta—where I met Kika…

I was born in Port au Prince, Haiti, into a loving, hard working family who was blessed with opportunities not available to many in my country. I spent my childhood taking many trips exploring my country, driving through mountains and spending most of my weekends at the beach. I must add that my love for the ocean had always been without measure. Tho My only notion of sailboats were the open wooden fishing boats in Haiti.
From my house, I had a clear view of the bustling commercial port where my mom worked, watching container ships come and go from distant lands. It fuelled my imagination, dreaming of someday traveling the world, though my family teased me for "living in the clouds."
At 18, I moved out of Haiti and to the U.S. for architecture school. In 2010, when Haiti was devastated by a massive earthquake, I felt helpless and deeply disconnected from my home and loved ones. That experience shifted something in me—I realized how fragile life is and how vast the world truly felt in that moment. I knew I couldn’t spend my life confined to a desk; I had to see the world. Traveling became more than a dream—it became a calling, a way to gather the knowledge and experiences I’d one day use to help make a difference in the world. And then, I met Dan …
As one aspect of life snowballs into the next, it is often hard to delineate where one ends and the next begins. Looking back, we often joke about how different our childhoods were, yet they led us both to the same place in time. I suppose you could say our journey started in college where we met. From there, our existence merged and one thing was certain, we both dreamt a bigger world existed than the one we grew up in and longed to see it for ourselves.
Our past experiences and education sparked our curiosity but never came close to satisfying our thirst for everything the world has to offer.
Although we have goals, aspirations and a list of plans for our future, we know these are all just guidelines. For us, it is much more about enjoying the journey than fixating on the destination. We fully understand that tomorrow it could all change and we are excited to continue to grow and develop over the years.
