In today’s economy, people believe it’s more important than ever to be socially responsible. Haiti Sailing Cup is proud to host annual sailing competitions within small fishermen villages in an effort to improve the lives of the fishermen

Patrick Beliard (HSC Founder)

For centuries, the Haitian fishermen have been building wooden sailboats to go fish and provide for their families and villages. They decorate them with bright colours, and often salvage, and use whatever they can find to create sails. In 2014, The Haiti Sailing Cup was founded by Patrick Beliard, (a local from Cap-Haitian) with the main mission to collaborate with small communities and boost the local economy. We believe this project has so much potential to make a huge impact on the Haitian community, and it is up to us to help make a difference, keeping this sailing tradition alive, and the reefs healthy. In 2018, Sailing Uma was more than proud to be part of this event by sponsoring our very own team. We were only able to reach this amazing goal thanks to more than 200 of our followers contributing from all over the globe.

Each year, we aim to get more boats, more sails, raise more awareness, and have more fishermen out on the water.

TEAM UMA members do more than just support one team. They get to be directly involved in the overall success of the Haiti Sailing Cup by helping provide new sails, boats, and outboards to all teams participating in the race.

“As a Haitian Sailor, This project is very dear to my heart, and I strongly believe it is the long term commitment that truly makes a difference. ”

Capt. Kika (HSC Board Member)

Let’s think bigger

Our future goal is not only to get MORE boats built, but also to start giving the fishermen BETTER boats.

The traditional Wooden boats built may be pretty but are not very strong, and cannot handle offshore fishing, forcing the fishermen to stick to the shorelines, hence making it very difficult to protect the local reefs.

With that in mind, we are aiming to start a boat building program, replacing the weak wooden boats with better design sailboats using recycled plastic. These new boats would be stronger, but also would encourage locals to recycle more with the potential to have their own fishing boat from the plastic they collect and donate to the recycling plant.

However, as you can imagine this project is a big undertaking, one that we cannot accomplish without helping hands.

By donating and joining Team Uma, you are contributing directly to our research and process of making this recycling boat project possible!
